Madagascar... the exotic “island continent”, in the heart of the Indian Ocean, is a real change of scene. It has one of the most fascinating assemblages of unique organisms on the planet. Over 1580 km long and 570 km wide, Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest island: some consider it the “Eighth Continent.” We are thrilled to extend this invitation to explore one of the least-known, yet most remarkable bastions of nature remaining on earth.
Best known for its lemurs (the most ancient relatives of monkeys, apes and humans), Madagascar’s fauna also includes colourful and bizarre looking chameleons, reptiles, giant butterflies and great numbers of birds. Vegetation includes majestic baobab trees, the amazing ‘spiny desert’, carnivorous pitcher plants and stunning orchids (including the Black Orchid) among the rare and endemic plants. Almost all of Madagascar’s reptile and amphibian species, half of its birds, and all of its remarkable 30 species of lemurs are endemic to the island - they can be found nowhere else on earth in their native state. In fact over 85% of all Malagasy living species are unique!
This specially-escorted 21-day tour is limited to a maximum of 23 participants, including our tour leader, to ensure an in-depth experience. We spend 16 wonderful days in Madagascar, exploring the key wildlife reserves and national parks. At the beginning and end of our tour you will also be able to relax in our first class, beachside hotel on the beautiful island of Mauritius. You may also wish to take the opportunity to extend your visit to arguably the most spectacularly beautiful island in the Indian Ocean, the verdant, volcanic French island of Réunion - a place full of natural and scenic wonders.
