Day 2: In Delhi

After a leisurely breakfast we embark on a sightseeing day in Delhi. As a complete contrast to the old, New Delhi stands in formal splendor. It is a city of wide boulevards that offers ever-changing perspectives of Lutyen’s landscaped city. It is also a city known for its formal parks, magnificent Parliament Building, the Rashtrapati Bhawan (the official residence of the President of India in the 330 acres of land and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens) and India Gate. In New Delhi we will also visit Qutab Minar, the 72.5 metre high tower dating back to the 13th century, and Humanyun’s Tomb, which was built in the 16th century and architecturally considered the forerunner of the Taj Mahal. Pulsing with energy and colour, Old Delhi is laced by a maze of narrow lanes, which twist and turn between the tall, leaning buildings. We will witness the hustle and bustle of thronged bazaars and experience the full sights, sounds and aromas indicative of the Indian sub continent. In Old Delhi we pass the famous Red Fort, surrounded by shops and bazaars, the Jama Masjid with its tapering minarets and wonderful marble domes and Chandni Chowk. Overnight hotel.

Nachiketa Tal trek – Uttarakhand is a short hike from Chaurangi khal – a small hamlet on the Uttarkashi-Lambgaon road. The three kilometre route brings us to a beautiful lake with the high Himalayan peaks as our backdrop.

Vishwanath temple –  in Uttarkashi is one of the prime pilgrimage attractions in Uttarkashi. An ancient temple, it is said that it was first built by Parasuram. Later, it was renovated by Maharani Khaneti, who was the wife of Sudarshan Shah in 1857, and is a must see. The temple has a Shivling, 60 cms high and 90 cms in circumference.

Shakti Temple –  This temple is just opposite Vishwanath temple. A big Trishul in this temple is the centre of attraction. The trishul is 6 metres in height and 90 cms at the bottom. Different people hold different views about the trishul; it is widely believed that it is made of iron in the upper part and copper in the lower part. Legend says that this trishul was thrown at devils by the goddess Durga.

Day 11: Agra – Taj Mahal & return to Delhi, trip concludes

Viewing the Taj Mahal at sunrise is well worth the effort of a very early rise this morning. Described as the most spectacular monument ever built for love, the Taj Mahal is the great pride of India. One of the legendary Indian poets, Rabindranath Tagore, described its beauty as “a teardrop on the face of eternity”.

It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died after giving birth to their 14th child in 1631. Around 20,000 workers devoted day and night to construct this magnificent monument.

Designed by the Iranian architect Khan Effendi, only the best marble was transported from Makrana in Rajasthan, and the precious stones came from Afghanistan, Persia and Central Asia. Specialists were brought in from Europe and other Asian counties to produce the exquisite marble screens and pietra dura made with the thousands of semi precious stones. It is said that Shah Jahan also wanted to build a black Taj Mahal as a tomb for himself on the opposite side of the river Yamuna, though sadly he could not afford his grandiose plans. After viewing the Taj we return to the hotel for breakfast and then take a sightseeing tour of the Agra Fort. Near the gardens of the Taj Mahal stands the important 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort of Agra. More often than not, the Agra Fort is overshadowed by the pristine beauty of the Taj, but for those looking for something beyond the romance of the Taj, the Agra Fort is worth seeing. Situated on the bank of the river Yamuna, the Red Fort stands as a citadel of the past that has witnessed centuries gone by.

In the afternoon we return to Delhi by road, those who depart India today will be transferred to the airport for onward arrangements.
