Madagascar – Northern Exposure

Dear Adventurer,

This 7-day extension covers the Northern tip of Madagascar, where we visit the magnificent National Park of Montagne d’Ambre – a high plateau containing flora and fauna that is unique to this region. We can expect to see species not found on our Lost World itinerary. Ankarana Special Reserve is certainly a wonder of nature with its tsingy, canyons and caves. We will take a visit to the red tsingy, made of colourful laterite soils and sands, spend time exploring the caves and viewing the unique wildlife of the area. We conclude our tour with a night in Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) over-looking its beautiful deep-water harbour.Madagascar v1 2015

Day 1

Antananarivo (Tana) to Antsiranana – Montagne d’Ambre

Fly from Antananarivo (Tana) to Antsiranana (Diego Suarez), in the extreme north of the island. We will be met by our local English speaking guide and taken on a short 4WD trip south of Diego which passes through Joffreville (an historical town characterised by its European architecture), before reaching the National Park of Montagne d’Ambre (25 Km). The afternoon is at your leisure.

Day 2

Montagne d’Ambre National Park

A full day is dedicated to exploring Montagne d’Ambre (Amber Mountain) National Park. It was established in 1958 and protects a total area of 185 square kilometres. This massif rises from the surrounding dry region forming an isolated stretch of montane rainforest covering an area of 18.200 hectares and lying at altitudes between 800 and 1.470 metres. The park offers a great biodiversity: a huge tropical forest with endemic fauna and flora, luxuriant vegetation and many waterfalls and volcanic lakes. The climate is perfect, and the cool air refreshing after the heat of the lowlands. The dominant ethnic groups in this area are the Sakavala and the Antankarana.

A large number of animal species inhabit the National Park including 25 species of mammals, among them 6 carnivores such as the ring-tailed mongoose and the fossa. There are 8 lemurs: Sanford’s brown lemur, crowned lemur, lesser bamboo lemur and five species of nocturnal lemurs. These forests are also the home of 75 different bird species (35 of which are endemic and even locally endemic, such as the Amber Mountain rock-thrush). Up to 60 reptiles, such as tiny stump-tailed chameleon, leaf-tailed geckos and snakes, 35 frogs and more than 40 butterflies can also be found.

Day 3

Montagne d’Ambre – Ankarana

After breakfast we drive four hours to Ankarana special reserve, located about 100km from Diego Suarez. Here we find impressive limestone pinnacles known as Tsingy, and the largest network of underground caves with stalactites and stalagmites, found in Africa. A sacred lake, botanic trail, canyons, caves, bats and crocodiles, make this reserve unique and an adventure in itself.

Day 4

Ankarana National Park

A full day will be dedicated to exploring the reserve: walk through the limestone formations called ‘Tsingy’ which characterise this reserve; visit the caves surrounded by dry deciduous trees such as Baobabs and Elephant foot plant. The reserve also contains one of the highest densities of primates found in the world. Its dense forests also support one of the largest and least disturbed populations of crowned lemurs. Keep an eye out for Sanford’s brown lemur, perrier’s black lemur, northern sportive lemur and dwarf lemurs, also ringtailed mongoose, fossa (a cat-like mammal), tenrecs (pygmy hedgehogs) and Madagascar striped civet which are also a common sight. Almost 100 bird species, 50 reptiles (including some endemic and threatened snakes and geckos) and ten species of frogs can be sighted in the park. Inside the spectacular and huge labyrinth of caves, 14 bat species, local endemic blind shrimps and the world’s only known cave-living crocodiles are waiting for your visit. At night swarms of bats and flying fox swoop in the darkness.

Day 5

Ankarana – Tsingy rouges – Antsiranana

After an early breakfast, we drive back to Antsiranana, with a detour to visit the “Tsingy rouges” or “red Tsingy”, which provide a wonderful spectacle of sculpture and colour. Shaped by wind and rain, made of laterite soil, standing right at the foot of eroded canyons, their balance is fragile and stunning.

The sandy track we follow to reach the Tsingy threads between palm trees “satrana”. It is not easily accessible but well worth the scramble. We arrive into Antsiranana in the late afternoon.

Day 6

Antsiranana – Antananairvo

Today will be at leisure to relax and enjoy the morning in Diego Suarez. Diego Suarez has one of the world’s most beautiful deep-water harbours, complete with a photogenic sugarloaf mountain behind the town. It is probably the most French city on Madagascar and very popular with visitors. In the afternoon, we transfer to Antsiranana airport for our flight back to Tana.

On arrival we are transferred to our hotel.

Day 7

Departure from Antananarivo (Tana)

Our final morning in Tana will be dedicated to visiting the handy craft markets for last minute shopping before we transfer to the airport for our return flight home.
